Painters might have criticized these early photomontages because there only using a camera while the painters are using their imagination and using paint and brushes, etc. The pictures were popular with the public because it was a new aspect with what their usual used too.
Some two reasons i can think of for this revival of an old technique my first reason is that using old techniques are better and captures everything and my second reason is that using new techniques aren't similar with the public.
